Doing EBC in January. Is it a good idea or necessary to carry a tent as an emergency shelter just in case?

No need to carry tent as there will be teahouses open even with less footfall during january. But it is good idea to carry a proper sleeping bag
Jan is a great time to go. We always go then. Zero need whatsoever for a tent. Several lodges in each village are always open.
No need….lodges will be open. The only possible use would be for 2 overnights at 3 passes trek and those two pass crossing over night places are closed…you can ask before going there however I wouldn’t even go in that case….bottom line—no.
You don’t need to carry the tents, most of tea house will be open.
Better take crampons as there will be some snow around. You will have a great hiking.
Plan ahead your journey and Tea House is along the way but it will be very cold I guess at that time. A heater blanket will be helpful. Plan your acclamatization well to prevent AMS.
I always carry a survival blanket but you won’t need a tent in the Khumbu if you stick to the main routes
